Meet Your Birth Professional – Gwen Roberts, Birth Doula and Student Midwife
Student midwife and birth doula Gwendolyn Roberts moved to Charlottesville from San Francisco at the end of 2012 and has fallen in love with this community. The Bay Area was a great place to train and start work as a birth doula, but the size and pace of this town just feel right. As a yogini, painter and obsessive reader, Gwen appreciates having time to slow down and appreciate.
Birth Circle and Doula Meetings at Bend were the first places Gwen made friends in town, and it has been awesome to see how well-attended those groups are. Common Ground is another major part of life here, for bodywork, yoga and community acupuncture. Along with studying at the Academy of Experiential Midwifery Education, Gwen is an associate editor for SQUAT Birth Journal, a radical midwifery and birth magazine.
Opportunities for collaboration and connecting just abound here and it has been exciting to serve as a volunteer with the new IRC refugee doula program, and just recently as Birth Matters Charlottesville’s Outreach Coordinator. At the website for Bright Birthing you’ll find information on labor arts services, which include belly blessings with henna, personalized mandalas and guidance for creating a labor altar. These artistic expressions can all be incorporated into work with doula clients, but are also available to any C’ville mamas.
